Another season is drawing to a close, so once again, I’ll be looking over some of the anime from the last few months…

[FIRST IMPRESSION] March Comes in Like a Lion 3月のライオン
Plot:
Shogi matches and convenience store runs are the only things that get Rei Kiriyama out of the house. After losing his family when he was younger, he rarely goes to school, rarely eats properly, and rarely socialises. Fortunately for Rei, he can live off the income he earns from playing shogi, so he has an apartment and enough food to keep him alive but it’s not exactly a fulfilling life. Sisters Akari, Hinata and Momo try their hardest to include him in their family, inviting him over for dinner and forcing him out of isolation. It isn’t easy but Rei gradually begins to change.
[FIRST IMPRESSION] Izetta the Last Witch 終末のイゼッタ
Plot:
During a tense war between Germania and Britannia, the small nation of Eylstadt looks set to become the latest country to fall victim to a Germanian invasion. In need of foreign aid, Eylstadt’s princess Ortfiné travels to neutral territory to negotiate with a Britannian ally, and on the way there she comes across a young girl imprisoned in a containment unit, who looks awfully familiar. A while later, the Germanian soldiers catch up with her and she is captured and forced on a flight away from safety. The containment unit Finé saw earlier is also onboard. With some magical intervention, she is able to take advantage of the turbulence and fight back, which leaves her injured. The girl inside the unit wakes up and sees the princess bleeding in front of her, which triggers a memory from her past. She breaks free and reveals herself as Izetta: an old friend from Finé’s childhood… and a witch.
[FIRST IMPRESSION] Yuri!!! On Ice
Plot:
Crushed after a series of losses, figure skater Yuri Katsuki returns home with his tail between his legs. Unable to pull himself out of a downward spiral following his defeat at the Grand Prix in Sochi, he starts to seriously consider retiring at twenty three. He’s ashamed of not being able to impress his idol, Victor Nikiforov, and rival skater Yuri Plisetsky resents him for not performing up to standard. Months later, he graduates college and he returns to his childhood home in Kyushu to stay with his parents until he’s figured things out. However, his retreat from public life is short-lived, once a viral video causes Yuri Katsuki to find none other than his hero sat stark naked in his family’s onsen.
